WRMS Staff

Hello West Rocks!

Thanks for another great week. Believe it or not, we have 12 days of school remaining.

As we enter these final weeks, we are excited to celebrate our students, finish strong, and make the most of every school day together.

We are proud to share that West Rocks has been selected as the recipient of the CAS Challenge to Educational Citizenship Award! This recognition celebrates the leadership, character, and positive impact of our SEL Ambassadors, who have helped strengthen our school community through their voice, example, and commitment to others.

A special congratulations goes to our social workers, \Ms. Wendy Chum and Ms. Caitlin Ornousky, for guiding this important work, and to student leader Emma Hernandez for helping spearhead the initiative. We also want to recognize Brooklyn DePalma, pictured here, and all of our SEL Ambassadors for their continued leadership and positive impact at West Rocks.

This week, our 7th graders traveled to Norwalk High School for an author visit with students from all four Norwalk middle schools. Students listened to Dr. Rameck Hunt, one of the authors connected to the book they read this year, We Beat the Street, and had the opportunity to hear an inspiring message about perseverance, choices, and success.

Our 8th graders also had a great time on their trip to Quassy Amusement Park. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate their accomplishments, enjoy time with friends, and make lasting memories as they approach the end of middle school.

As we move through the final 12 days, it is very important that students attend school every day through the last day of school. Attendance matters, and each day gives students the opportunity to finish assignments, participate in celebrations, stay connected to routines, and end the year on a positive note.

Thank you for your continued support, and have a great rest of your weekend!

Principal, West Rocks Middle School

DUAL LANGUAGE

VIDEO: Dual Language Class of 2026

On Friday night, we held our first-ever Dual Language Celebration, with approximately 250 people in attendance to recognize this special 8th grade class of students who have completed their Dual Language experience at West Rocks. Students received certificates and cords, which they will proudly wear during the Promotion Ceremony. We are incredibly proud to send these students to high school well-prepared and on track to pursue the Seal of Biliteracy from the State of Connecticut.

Thank you to all of our families, students, and staff…and a special thank you to our Dual Language Coordinator Mrs. Sheila Chimento for making this possible! Check out the video using the link above!

VISUAL PERFORMING ARTS

Wicked is an amazing show, and this week a group of students and staff from our Visual and Performing Arts program had the opportunity to see it on Broadway! Experiences like this help bring learning to life and give students meaningful exposure beyond the classroom. Each of our programs works to provide multiple off-campus experiences throughout the year that connect to students’ interests, talents, and future opportunities.

SOCIAL WORK TIP OF THE MONTH

SEL Focus: Reflection & Summer Planning

The school year is ending! Let's take time to look back and get ready for a fun summer.

Tip: Take a "Year in Review" walk. As a family, go for a walk and talk about the past school year. Ask questions like: "What was your biggest success this year?" or "What's a new skill you're proud of?" This helps them reflect on their growth and the memories they've made. Then, talk about summer plans and what they're looking forward to.

SEL Focus: Reflection & Summer Planning

Activity: "High/Low/Goal" Summer Check-In

How-To: Once a week during the summer, gather the family and share:

- High: The best part of your week.

- Low: The most challenging or frustrating part of your week.

- Goal: One small thing you want to accomplish next week (e.g., read a chapter, try a new recipe, go swimming).

Keeps a structure of self-reflection and goal-setting going, even during the break, and helps the child articulate their feelings and plans.
