Hello West Rocks!

It was a great and busy week at West Rocks. We made it through the heat, and thankfully things cooled off a bit on Thursday and Friday. Hopefully this weekend is not too rainy!

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. There will be no school on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Our students were locked in and focused on their Math Smarter Balanced Assessment this week. They completed both the computer adaptive test and the performance task, and we are so proud of the effort, focus, and perseverance they showed.
Next week, our grade 8 students will take the NGSS Next Generation Science Standards assessment. One more to go!

The West Rocks Marching Band and Color Guard practiced each day this week to get ready for the Memorial Day Parade. They marched around the bus loop and even around Notre Dame across the street as they prepared. We are proud of how they adjusted, practiced, and represented West Rocks.

Please look for them at Monday’s Norwalk Memorial Day Parade… it will be a sea of green!

Congratulations to 8th grader Madison Medley for winning Norwalk Transit’s “Words in Transit” Poetry Contest. Her work is currently on display at the Norwalk Art Space and will eventually be seen on one of the city’s buses!

We also had a special visit from Division I college athletes connected to Norwalk. They spoke with students about balancing schoolwork and athletics, challenges they faced along the way, and the qualities students will need to be successful in high school, college, and beyond. Attendance matters!

As we get closer to the end of the school year, every day still counts. Please help your student finish strong by being in school, on time, and ready to learn each day.

NGSS TESTING

On May 27th and 28th, our 8th graders will take a state science test called the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). The test is given in Grade 5, 8, and 11.

What is this test? This test helps us see how well students understand science. Instead of just memorizing facts from a textbook, students will answer questions that ask them to solve problems, understand real-world situations, and think like scientists. Our goal is for students to “level up” by maintaining their Level 4 status or increasing their proficiency one level higher than their 5th Grade score.

How You Can Help at Home: Your student does not need to study for this test! You can help them do their best just by making sure they:

Get a good night’s sleep.
Eat a good breakfast.
Get to school on time so they don't feel rushed.
Bring a fully charged computer/Chromebook. We will have a special raffle for our Grade 8 Students!

VPA UPDATES

The WRMS VPA Program is excited to host a community trip to Wicked on Broadway on Thursday, June 4th. The trip is open to any WRMS student, staff, or family member! The price is $200 per person and it includes bus transportation and ticket to the 7pm show. We have amazing seats in the orchestra!

GRADE 8 UPDATES

GRADE 7 UPDATES

We are excited to announce an upcoming field trip for our 7th-grade students to Norwalk High School on Thursday, June 4th!

This trip is a wonderful extension of our recent curriculum. Our 7th graders read the inspiring book We Beat the Street, and during this visit, they will have the incredible opportunity to attend a presentation by Dr. Hunt, one of the doctors featured in the book. Following the presentation, there will be a Question and Answer session where students can engage directly with Dr. Hunt.

Trip Details & Schedule:

Date: Thursday, June 4th
Departure from West Rocks: 9:45 AM
Return to West Rocks: 12:45 PM
Lunch Information: Students will be back at West Rocks in time for their regularly scheduled lunch period.
