Weekly Update 3/9/24

Weekly Update 3/9/24
WRMS Staff

Hello West Rocks!

I hope your March is off to a great start! We celebrated Read Across America Day on Monday! We began the day by “dropping everything and reading” during the WIN period. Lisa Story was one of our guest readers from the Norwalk Public Library, and we even had Mrs. Duran’s therapy dog Hank pay our students a visit! Students participated in games and raffles and were awarded prizes if they guessed the mystery character. Research shows students grow if they read independently at least 20 minutes per day. Please support by having your students meet that expectation!

We had an advisory lesson on Wednesday in which students read and discussed real statements from middle school students – around belonging, connectedness, empathy – and applied their experiences to those concepts and feelings.

Our annual March Madness! Staff v Student basketball game was a success on Thursday! The staff got off to a big lead, the students charged back, and the game was close until the end. The staff team won! One of the highlights was the halftime show from both the student cheerleaders and the staff cheerleaders!

Check out the West Rocks Facebook or Instagram for some pictures:

The grade 6 and 7 class winners of the first month’s schoolwide IXL challenge got their pizza on Friday! Grade 8 will enjoy theirs on Monday! They got to eat slices during lunch…there were a lot of jealous students. We anticipate another great month of math practice and competition. An updated scoreboard for March will be shared next week.

Have a great rest of the weekend,
Adam Reynolds
Principal, West Rocks Middle School

PS. There are different schedules throughout the month including 90-minute early dismissals on March 14 and 21 then a 2-hour early dismissal on March 25. Please continue to refer to the district’s calendar as you plan accordingly (https://www.norwalkps.org/about/district-overview/official-district-calendar).

Students in our dual language program traveled to Silvermine Elementary School on Friday to read to our future students! Grade 6 Physicals – from Nurse Michelle Rybnick
The state of Connecticut requires that all current 6th and 9th grade students submit a current physical and list of updated immunizations, performed on 7/1/23 or after. These must be on the state of Connecticut Health Assessment Record forms found here. In addition to the physical, all 6th grade students must receive the TDAP and Meningococcal vaccines. All students must be compliant with these requirements, or they may not attend school in August 2024. Please provide these documents to the school nurse now or as soon as possible to avoid disruption to your child's school year- do not wait!
Thank you to those who have already provided this documentation. Please contact Nurse Michelle Rybnick (rybnickm@norwalkps.org) with any questions.
