Hello West Rocks!
Thank you to those students, staff and families who volunteered this morning at our winter clean up and our drama club’s set construction! It was a great morning…the cafeteria and hallways were painted, and the stage was transformed! Wait until you see it!
We just finished the first month of our schoolwide IXL competition! Winners are being calculated and will be posted soon! The winning class in each grade/group will earn a pizza party!
- As of this weekend, the new competition begins, and the scores reset. Good luck and keep practicing those skills! YOU CAN HELP! Please support our initiative to have students spend more time learning and practicing math.
Read Across America is this Monday! We have many activities planned! Be sure your student has their independent reading book in school.
This past Thursday was a great day culminating Black History Month! We had two schoolwide assemblies that included African drumming, performances by the jazz band and chorus, and readings from our students. Images are above. Students facilitated the entire presentation! A huge shout out to Mrs. Jean, Dr. Walters, Ms. Powell, Dr. Golding, and Ms. Mouland for their work in getting it together. We are still working on our door decorating project and each homeroom is decorating their door recognizing one individual that demonstrates the national theme of African Americans and the Arts. Also, great job to Mrs. Jean and our jazz band for representing West Rocks at the districtwide festival at Brien McMahon on Thursday night.
Please continue to utilize our school website and calendar for upcoming events…we have a lot planned including this Thursday’s March Madness! Our annual Staff v Students basketball game is this Thursday evening @ 6-8pm! https://wrms.norwalkps.org/

Travel Basketball Championships
Congratulations to the boys and girls basketball teams for playing in the City-wide Championship game last Wednesday night! The boys won their second straight title defeating Nathan Hale! The girls lost a close game against Ponus. Great job to all our student athletes and special thanks to our Coach Voytek and Coach Cammarota for a great season!
March Madness! Staff v Students (March 7) 6-8pm
March Madness at West Rocks is here! This Thursday, March 7 is the annual Staff versus Student basketball game from 6-8pm! Tickets are $10 and concessions will be sold at the game. All proceeds go to the 8th grade class!
Yearbooks
Our final order for Yearbooks has been placed! The West Rocks Middle School yearbook is still on sale online until the extra books ordered are all gone! Order today so you are guaranteed a book in May/June. There is NO guarantee there will be extra books at that time! Please direct questions to our yearbook adviser Dr. Maria Fox (foxm@norwalkps.org).

Family Tech Night – SAVE THE DATE
There will be a Family Tech Night in our Verizon Lab on Thursday April 4 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. More information to come!

Read Across America
Monday, March 4 is Read Across America Day! We have many different activities planned for students to show they are “crazy for reading!” Check out the schedule – we will drop everything and read, have a “StarBooks Café,” students will enter a mystery raffle, and some will travel to elementary schools to read to future West Rocks students!
Advisory on Wednesday
This Wednesday, March 6 is an advisory day at West Rocks. Students will stay in homeroom until around 9:00 am and participate in a lesson on “Student Voices” with their teachers and classmates. Students are working on a curriculum called Be the Change from the Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility.
Excellence in Education and Educational Support
Congratulations to the winners of the district wide awards for Excellence in Education and Educational Support at West Rocks Middle School!
- Excellence in Education: Mrs. Nicole Jean, Band Director
- Excellence in Educational Support: Ms. Mariana Palacios, Bilingual Paraeducator
These two were nominated by their colleagues and the School Governance Council voted! They will be honored at the district wide event in May. We are so proud!
