Weekly Update 1/27/24

Weekly Update 1/27/24
WRMS Staff

Hello West Rocks!

We are officially in the second semester and quarter 3! It is amazing how quickly the year is moving.

This Monday, January 29, 2024 is a 2-hour early dismissal for students. Staff has professional development. Students will be dismissed at 12:50 pm.

Students changed their related arts classes this week and we will change our WIN classes on Tuesday. Please continue to use the PowerSchool Parent Portal to see classes, monitor grades and assignments, and keep up to date with your student’s attendance. If you need assistance accessing your PowerSchool Parent Portal account or downloading the app, please contact our main office secretary Ms. Nazira Coto (coton@norwalkps.org).

We celebrated the life and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr this past Tuesday with two assemblies that included student speakers, keynotes from the Norwalk community, and student musical performances. Students also completed projects in service of the school and in service of others in the community. Thank you to our two keynote speakers: Pastor and State Representative Dr. Charles Stallworth and Norwalk Common Council member Mr. Dajuan Wiggins.

January 27th is National Holocaust Remembrance Day. We took time on Friday morning to remember and teach about the Holocaust. Special thank you to our orchestra director Mr. Glen Ullman for speaking to the school and highlighting important values and naming how we can apply lessons learned in our own lives each day.

Great job to Band Director Mrs. Jean and the 6th grade band for their performances this week! They had an amazing school performance during the WIN period on Wednesday then followed it up with a knock-out concert that evening! It is amazing to hear their growth and development in a short period of time.

Have a great weekend,
Adam Reynolds
Principal, West Rocks Middle School

PS. Hope you can come out to the Bridgeport Islander’s hockey game at 7:00pm! Thank you to our PTA for setting up a great event! Get your tickets using this link: https://fevo-enterprise.com/event/westrocks

ACADEMICS, PROGRAMS, AND CAMPAIGNS

IXL Competition! Math practice 5 days a week!
We kick off a school wide IXL competition this week! Each class will compete against one another to see which class will have the greatest number of lessons successfully completed in the math program IXL. Math teachers will assign the lessons and students will be expected to complete a minimum of 5 lessons per week. This will also be included in their grade in PowerSchool.

Students can complete more than what is required to earn a pizza party and other fun events for their individual math class! We will dedicate some time during WIN each week for this initiative.

HOW CAN I HELP? Please support the school and your student by asking if they have completed their IXL math lesson each day! Ask them to show you using their Chromebook. Students will log into ClassLink, then click the IXL icon (image of what to look for on the right).

Attendance Matters!

Students need to be in school every day. The State of Connecticut considers a student chronically absent if they have been absent 10% of the time – this counts both excused and unexcused absences. If your student has been absent 8-9 days, they are considered chronically absent by the district and state.
Attendance letters will be sent home this week indicating if your student has been out 5 days or more.
Please contact your child’s counselor for more information.
