Weekly Update 12/14/25

Weekly Update 12/14/25
WRMS Staff

Hello West Rocks!

It was another great week, full of learning, creativity, and community connections. With Winter Break right around the corner, please continue to check the district calendar for key dates and reminders. As winter weather approaches, any delays or cancellations will be communicated through ParentSquare and the district website.

Congratulations to our Chorus and Orchestra on a wonderful concert Wednesday evening! The performances showcased not only students’ musical growth, but also their confidence and commitment. Thank you to our music teachers, students, and families who made the night so special.

Holiday Spirit Week
Our National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring our annual Holiday Spirit Week! Be sure to check out the flyer above so everyone can join in on the fun during the last four school days before break: this Thursday, Friday, and next Monday and Tuesday. We’re looking forward to seeing lots of school spirit as we head into the holidays together.

Student-Led Conferences Preparation
This week, students participated in an extended homeroom, working with their advisors to begin selecting artifacts for their Student-Led Conferences in March. These artifacts highlight learning, growth, and accomplishments, and help students take ownership of their academic journey.

Looking Ahead…A Busy Week!

Next week will be another busy and exciting one, including our Grade-Level PAWS Awards, where we recognize students for demonstrating Positive Interactions, Accountability, Willingness, and Safety. We look forward to celebrating students who consistently model our schoolwide expectations. Families of students receiving an award have been notified by email from their respective grade-level leader with the date and time of the celebration.

Attendance Matters!
One of our continued priorities this year is making sure students attend school every day, as consistent attendance has a major impact on learning, confidence, and long-term success. The State of Connecticut defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% or more of the school year, and even a few absences each month can add up quickly. Our counselors and administrators will continue reaching out to families when patterns emerge, and the district has begun sending notifications as students reach specific thresholds. Thank you for helping us support strong attendance habits.

Grade 6 Gifted and Talented students will showcase their learning during a Diversity Project Exhibition on December 15 from 8:45-9:45 am. This exhibition highlights students’ thoughtful work and growing understanding of diversity and inclusion. Families of participating students should refer to communication from Ms. Meade for additional details.

A Moment of Reflection
Today marks the anniversary of the tragic events at Sandy Hook, and our thoughts are also with the families and community impacted by the recent school shooting in Providence. These moments remind us how important it is to continue working together to create safe, caring schools and communities. We remain committed to supporting our students with compassion, connection, and hope for a better future.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support.

Principal, West Rocks Middle School

High School Choice

Please refer to the Parent Square posts from Dr. Golding regarding upcoming Open Houses and specific dates for the lottery. A friendly reminder that if your child wishes to attend their feeder high school (NHS or BMHS), they do not need to apply to the lottery. Questions about school choice and feeder schools can be directed to Mr. Boland (Grade 8 Counselor, bolandm@norwalkps.org) or Dr. Golding (Grade 8 Team Leader, goldings@norwalkps.org). Be on the lookout for more information about the application process this week in a separate post.

Grade 8 VPA Students

Band, Chorus, Orchestra, and Drama students have a busy week ahead. We have many trips out to see performances and more opportunities to perform. Please be sure to refer to the communication from Dr. Golding or your child’s music teacher. A friendly reminder to students to check in with teachers to collect assignments or turn in any assignments that are due. Teachers will post class materials on Google Classroom.

Grade 8 Awards

Our ceremony is this Tuesday, Dec. 16th. Families of award recipients received an email invitation this past week. The ceremony begins at 8:30am and families of those being recognized are welcome and encouraged to attend. At the end of the ceremony, students will receive information about the Grade 8 trips for the remainder of the year. That information will also be shared with families on Parent Square later that day. Please feel free to reach out to Dr. Golding with any questions.

MARINE SCIENCE

Time Travelers and Ocean Explorers!

Our 6th Grade Marine Science students have been on a whirlwind of discovery, attending TWO incredible trips over the last few weeks! First stop: Diving deep into the ocean's world at the Maritime Aquarium!  They explored the crucial topic of Global Climate and saw firsthand how it impacts our marine ecosystems. (We even got to touch some rays! ) Next, they journeyed millions of years into the past at the Yale Peabody Museum!  Studying exhibits on Geological Time, they connected the dots between ancient life, fossils, and the history of our planet. From the deep past to the changing present, these students are becoming true earth science experts!  We are so proud of their curiosity and dedication.
