Weekly Update 12/2/23

Weekly Update 12/2/23
WRMS Staff

Hello West Rocks!

One week down, three to go before winter break! There is a lot happening, so please utilize our website for the school calendar, Parent Square for communication from teachers, staff, and advisers, and the PowerSchool Parent Portal for assignments, grades, and attendance updates. This includes school events, awards ceremonies, community builders like Spirit Week…and more!

As I communicated earlier this week, we take threats against the school and community seriously. We live in an age that words matter and need to respond swiftly and according to established protocols when a safety concern is brought to our attention. As a school, the impact of images and words with a focus on digital citizenship was incorporated into our advisory lesson. During our advisory lessons, we have built small communities and shared goals, hopes, fears.

We all need to work together to maintain an environment where all members of the community feel safe, successful, and known.

When used appropriately, social media can have a wide-reaching positive impact! Please follow West Rocks Middle School on Facebook and Instagram (wrms_ct) to see all the great things that are happening!

Thanks for your continued support.

Principal, West Rocks Middle School

EVENTS AND GROUPS

Scholastic Book Fair

The WRMS will be hosting its Fall Book Fair from 12/4 - 12/8 in the Library during all school days. The Book Fair will also be open during the evening of 12/6 during the Band Concert. If you wish to set up an eWallet account for your child, simply register here. Please direct questions to our Library Media Specialist - Ms. Sandy Mackowski (mackowskis@norwalkps.org).

School Store – Panther Provisions is OPEN!

Our school store, Panther Provisions, will be open Wednesday (12/6), Thursday (12/7), and Friday (12/8) to cash in PAWS cards and redeem Sport-a-thon credits. The store will only be open during lunch shifts during the three days. Lots of great stuff to “cash in” those well-deserved PAWS cards!

Picture Re-takes
PICTURE RETAKES are on Tuesday, December 6th from 8:30 to 11:30am.
Retake Day is for:

  • Any student not satisfied with the original portrait and wishes to return original package to the photographer.
  • Any student who was absent on the original day whether you are purchasing a package or not.
  • Families that wish to pre-order a Picture Day package can log into mylifetouch.com with our Picture Day ID: EVT96RSRG

Band Concerts
Our band director Mrs. Nicole Jean has been working with our WRMS band since August and they are ready to play multiple concerts this week! Tuesday (12/6) at 6:00 pm, they will be performing at the SONO Mall! Come check us out while you are shopping!

Wednesday, (12/7) our band will play in the morning 8:30-9:00 am for students, then for the entire community at 7:00 pm. Please come support our students!

ACADEMICS, PROGRAMS, AND CAMPAIGNS

Independent Reading and Math Practice

As a school, we are continuing to focus on students extending their practice with literacy and math outside of the school day. Research shows that more exposure to text and problem-solving as well as mathematical practices leads to an increase in college and career readiness. Students in all grades have regular independent reading assigned for homework as well as multiple days of math homework each week. This can be in the form of IXL, Khan Academy, or practice problems on a worksheet. Please check with your student to make sure they are meeting this expectation.

Grade 8 Krispy Kreme Fundraiser
Students received a green order form. A box of one dozen original glazed donuts is $20. For every box sold, students earn $10 that can be applied to any field trip this year. This includes Boston, the year-end Quassy trip, or a music department trip. Families who have requested financial aid should consider participating.

Lockers – Food, Jackets, and Cell Phones
We are continuing to see snacks, food, and candy in school. These result in unwanted food to be in classrooms and the hallways. Please support our efforts by keeping those at home or telling your student to make sure it stays in their lockers until lunch. There should not be food in the classrooms without the teacher’s permission.

Sock Drive for the Homeless
During the month of December, we will be collecting new socks to donate to our local homeless shelter. Boxes will be in the lobby so students can drop them off on their way in the building each morning.
