Weekly Update 11.18.23
WRMS Staff

Hello West Rocks! Students and staff had a great experience at our 2023 Sport-a-Thon yesterday! There were some last-minute donations that brought our total close to our goal of $15,000. We still have donations to count that were brought in yesterday morning, and we did keep the online donations open for a few more days to allow for other support from loved ones around the holiday! 😊 Thank you so much for all your support and donations! These funds enable us to provide additional opportunities and resources for all of our students throughout the school year.  Thank you to everyone that also helped by donating to our Food Drive. We collected non-perishable food items in homerooms and our Student Council and National Junior Honor Society are sorting into bags for our families to pick up. All food and gift cards go directly to families in the West Rocks Community. We are still finalizing the count to see which homeroom had the most to earn a breakfast! Because of the shortened week and holiday, there will be no Parent Square post next weekend. The next communication will be Saturday, December 2. Everyone at West Rocks hopes you and your family has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Adam Reynolds Principal, West Rocks Middle School PS. Picture re-takes will be on Friday, December 8. Those are only for students who chose to re-take their photos. The re-take will be in the yearbook.

EVENTS AND GROUPS

Calendar, Schedule, Weather Related Changes

  • Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, we have a 2-hour early dismissal on Wednesday, November 22 and no school Thursday and Friday. There are also days off for the winter holidays in December.

  • Please refer to our Norwalk Public Schools district calendar throughout the year for accurate information. https://www.norwalkps.org/about/district-overview/official-district-calendar

  • As we close November and enter December, please pay attention for weather related changes to our schedule. These include delayed openings, early dismissals, and cancelation of school. The district makes those decisions based on the information they have and communicate it on the website, through social media and television outlets, as well as a phone call.

Communication We have made it a priority to provide school communication in ways that will reach more families and show all the great things that are happening in real time! To this end, we will be posting on our West Rocks social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram) as well as ensuring our website is up to date with calendar and staff information. You will see those changes in the immediate future - check out the FB post from Sport-a-Thon! All of our teachers and staff have been trained on and started using Parent Square to streamline communication to families. This is so it is in all “one place.” Feedback from families from the last few years described challenges because staff used a variety of platforms.

ACADEMICS AND PROGRAMS

Quarter 1 Report Cards Q1 grades and comments were finalized Thursday, November 16 in PowerSchool. Families have access to view final Q1 Grades and comments in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. We will NOT distribute hardcopies of the Q1 report card. If you need access to the PowerSchool Parent Portal, please contact your child’s counselor or the main office.

Q2 is now underway. Attendance, grades, and contact information is available in the PowerSchool Parent and Student Portals.

Lockers – Food, Jackets, and Cell Phones During the weeks between Halloween and Thanksgiving, we always see more snacks, food, and candy in school. These result in unwanted food to be in classrooms and the hallways. Please support our efforts by keeping those at home or telling your student to make sure it stays in their lockers until lunch. There should not be food in the classrooms without the teacher’s permission.

Lockers should also be used for cell phones and jackets as has been the policy since the start of the year. Thank you for your continued support of this expectation.
